Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) has announced that Ryan “Cal” Callaghan will serve as the organization’s next president and chief executive officer. The appointment becomes effective Jan. 1, 2026.
BHA’s Leadership Transition
Callaghan will succeed Patrick Berry, who left the position in July after 18 months at the helm. The role was previously held by Land Tawney, who led the organization for more than a decade.
According to BHA’s board of directors, Callaghan was chosen for his long record of public-lands advocacy and his leadership within the hunting and angling community. The board described him as a familiar face to both grassroots members and national conservation partners.
Background and Experience
Callaghan currently serves as Director of Conservation at MeatEater. He’s known for his focus on public-lands access, habitat protection, and hunter engagement. He also previously served as chair of BHA’s North American board and has been involved with the organization for more than a decade.
In a statement, Callaghan said he was excited to take on the role and continue BHA’s mission to defend public lands, waters, and wildlife. He plans to continue his work with MeatEater and maintain partnerships with outdoor brands, including First Lite.
Organizational Focus
BHA’s leadership said Callaghan’s appointment reflects the group’s commitment to expanding its reach and influence. His experience in both media and conservation outreach is expected to strengthen the organization’s visibility among hunters, anglers, and policymakers.
Board chair Chris Jenkins called the hire a “best-case scenario” for BHA, citing Callaghan’s authenticity and deep connection to the field community.
What’s Next

Callaghan’s transition period will continue through the end of the year as he works with staff and state chapters to shape priorities for 2026. His stated goals include growing membership, strengthening partnerships, and maintaining a nonpartisan approach to conservation issues.
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers was founded in 2004 and has grown into one of the most visible voices for public-land users across North America. The group’s mission focuses on protecting access, habitat, and the fair-chase principles that guide responsible hunting and fishing.
