From Central Florida to the Keys, the end of the Florida peninsula is a complicated place, to say the least. The ecology is endlessly dynamic — thanks to the fluid boundary between freshwater wetlands, the coastal buffer of mangrove forests, and rich saltwater estuaries — and at risk, thanks to mankind’s attempts to control it.
It’s one giant ecosystem, not only interconnected by complex hydrology, but also by a distinct culture of caretakers. A few anglers, with lives oriented around these wild and precious waters, have committed themselves to making sure the fish habitat continues to thrive in the future.
Episode 1 of Common Currents outlines the history and stakes of the massive efforts to restore the Everglades, and then traces the lives of a trio of passionate local anglers connected by a desire to do their part. It weaves the voices of: Capt. Chris Wittman, a Sanibel Island–based fishing guide who co-founded Captains for Clean Water; Emily Hanzlik, a young and decorated professional angler pursuing a career in marine biology; and Alycia Downs, an active mom and Chief Program & Development Officer of Captains for Clean Water.
