Last weekend’s Florida A&M University homecoming game was marred by a mass shooting that took place shortly after the game ended, with a dozen people injured, all but one by gunfire. It was a troubling incident, and now that authorities have made an arrest, the whole “troubling” thing got worse.
You see, this wasn’t some disgruntled student from a rival college. It was a kid who isn’t even old enough to drive.
A 15-year-old boy was remanded into secure detention in Florida on Monday charged with 11 counts of attempted murder following a mass shooting at a college homecoming party on Saturday.
Six adults and six minors were injured, all but one with gunshot wounds, in the gunfire near the Florida Agricultural + Mechanical University campus in Tallahassee.
It was among five mass shootings over the weekend – cases in which at least four victims were wounded or killed, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The archive, a nonpartisan resource, has recorded 386 such cases in the US for the year so far.
On Monday, the Tallahassee police department posted on Facebook that detectives had arrested a suspect in the shooting. The agency identified the suspect as Anthony Rivers III, 15.
Police do not typically identify criminal suspects who are minors, though the severity of the charges facing Rivers made him an exception. He faces 11 charges of attempted second-degree murder and one of possession of a firearm by a delinquent after being arrested on Sunday, police said.
Rivers appeared in juvenile court on Monday dressed in a white T-shirt and gray shorts. He was not handcuffed and did not speak during the brief hearing, during which Leon county circuit court judge Anthony Sheeran ordered him to remain in secure detention pending an arraignment.
Those are very serious charges, and his age makes one thing perfectly clear: he’s too young to lawfully own or buy a gun, yet he had one and was willing to use it.
Florida doesn’t have the most extensive gun control laws by any stretch of the imagination, though it’s not as pro-gun as some people in the state want to believe. There are waiting periods for gun sales, no one under 21 can buy any kind of firearm, and a host of others. Still, a 15-year-old twerp allegedly got his hands on a firearm, took it to a college homecoming party, and then decided to open fire for some inane reason, injuring a dozen people.
I’d say “kids these days,” but the truth is that kids in my day were doing crap like this, too, though they called them “drive-by shootings” instead. And back then as well as today, most kids aren’t doing things like this at all. Violent crime has always been committed by a small number of people compared to the population at large.
This incident started as an altercation between two groups that authorities simply say knew one another. Whether there were rival gangs or just two different groups of friends who didn’t like one another is unknown. What we do know is that this altercation eventually led to a kid who had to catch a ride to the party allegedly shooting up the damn place.
Now he can rot in a jail cell until he’s arraigned, and if he’s convicted, hopefully long afterward too.
God knows what he’ll do if he figures he has nothing left to lose.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
Silver leverage is strong here; beta cuts both ways though.
