The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced $25 million in new grants and resources for law enforcement programs.
The department said July 21 that it has allocated funds for grants linked to three specific federal programs that function in the law enforcement space, as well as funds for more general programs that support policing and other branches of law enforcement.
The DOJ will release the grants through the Office of Community Oriented Police Services (COPS Office) and interested programs can apply to this body to receive funding.
“The Department of Justice is investing in strategies that reduce crime, hold offenders accountable, and give law enforcement the tools they need to do their jobs,” said Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. in a statement. “These additional funding programs are another example of our commitment to safer neighborhoods, smarter strategies, and stronger partnerships across the country.”
The Grant Programs
The DOJ has allocated $13 million of these grants to programs linked to the “Safer Outcomes: Enhancing Crisis Response Training for Law Enforcement Program,” which works with organizations that provide training and training support operations for the agency.
The agency has allocated another $6 million towards Community Police Development (CPD) Law Enforcement Products and Resources, programs that develop products and resources that provide guidance on best practices and approaches for crime fighting and policing.
The department said it would prioritize creative ideas to help create a more positive image of the law enforcement profession, especially in themes including human trafficking, immigration and border security, and gang violence enforcement.
An additional $4.2 million has been earmarked for the Collaborative Reform Initiative (CRI) to fund programs that offer services to highlight the best practices of law enforcement agencies.
The department also said that up to $2.5 million will be available for accreditation bodies associated with the Community Policing Development (CPD) Accreditation Program. These bodies provide technical assistance to agencies, including in the realms of customer service and marketing.
The department has also issued grants to programs that provide resources to advance crime-fighting and policing and other law enforcement programs. They include programs that provide technical assistance to law enforcement agencies and programs that will establish accreditation bodies to increase the number of accredited law enforcement agencies across the country.
These latest grants come after the COPS Office released nearly $700 million in funding opportunities this past June. These grants were made to support the hiring and retention of law enforcement and to provide active shooter training, among other focuses.
It comes as public trust in U.S. law enforcement is undergoing a fragile stabilization following historic lows, even as municipal police budgets continue to expand nationwide.
The Trump administration has reshaped American law enforcement into a deregulated model that prioritizes street-level intervention over civil rights oversight. There has been an increased flow of surplus military weaponry to local departments, while the administration has deployed National Guard units to suppress civil unrest and monitor new potential incidents in major cities including Los Angeles and Washington D.C.
