If you think shotgun ranges top out at 40 or 50 yards, think again.
Benelli and exhibition shooter Steve Gould have officially rewritten the record books by breaking a clay target at a certified 201 yards. The first time anyone has ever accomplished the feat with a shotgun.
To put that into perspective, that’s more than two football fields away.
The record-setting shot came with a Benelli ETHOS SuperSport A.I. equipped with the company’s Advanced Impact (A.I.) barrel technology and loaded with Federal Heavyweight TSS No. 7 ammunition. Independent surveyors verified every distance using professional-grade equipment, making the accomplishment official.
But Gould wasn’t done there.
During the same record-setting session, he also shattered clays at 130 yards using standard target loads and 160 yards with Federal Prairie Storm ammunition before saving the jaw-dropping 201-yard shot for last.
Even more impressive? Gould’s previous world record stood at 180 yards. He didn’t just beat it. He pushed it another 21 yards farther, becoming the first shooter in history to break the 200-yard barrier.
“This is more than just a new record,” Gould said. “This is proof of what can happen when groundbreaking shotgun technology, premium ammunition, and relentless determination come together.”
Benelli says the feat showcases what its Advanced Impact barrel system was designed to do: maintain tighter patterns, higher pellet velocity and more downrange energy than traditional shotgun barrels. Pair that with modern tungsten super shot (TSS) ammunition, and apparently 200-yard clay breaks are no longer impossible.
Will anyone top 201 yards?
After watching Steve Gould’s latest accomplishment, it might be unwise to bet against him.
