A Florida mother found herself in every parent’s nightmare Sunday afternoon when a man allegedly forced his way into her home and threatened her family.
Fortunately, she was armed.
According to reporting by Fox 35 Orlando, the incident happened in Palm Coast when Michael McDonald allegedly opened the woman’s garage, banged on windows, and then entered the home through the front door.
Inside were the mother and her two children.
The woman, identified as a friend of McDonald’s sister, told reporters she quickly realized the situation was turning dangerous.
“I panicked and got my gun,” she said. “That was my first time using it.”
Investigators say McDonald demanded money and threatened the woman and her children after entering the residence.
The mother reportedly warned him multiple times that she would shoot if he didn’t leave.
According to her account, McDonald responded, “I don’t care. Shoot me.”
That’s exactly the kind of statement that sounds tough right up until somebody actually pulls the trigger.
The woman told Fox 35 she fired a single shot, striking McDonald in the arm.
“He took off,” she said.
Importantly, she emphasized she wasn’t trying to kill anyone.
“I was trying to get them out to where my children and I were safe in our house,” she explained.
Flagler County deputies later located McDonald at a nearby hospital, where he had reportedly gone seeking treatment for the gunshot wound.
Authorities arrested him and charged him with burglary with assault.
According to investigators, McDonald also has an extensive criminal history that includes grand theft and robbery-related offenses.
Chief Deputy Joe Borelli said the case is a textbook example of why Florida’s Stand Your Ground protections exist.
“She’s in her own home,” Borelli said. “Someone comes in uninvited, refuses to leave, advances towards you, is aggressive towards you and your children.”
He noted that the woman even gave the suspect a final warning before firing.
“She had the right to defend herself. And she did.”
Cases like this are a reminder that defensive gun uses don’t always end with a criminal dead and a dramatic headline. Sometimes they end with a mother protecting her children, a suspect fleeing the scene, and everyone who belongs in the home going to bed safely that night.
For this Palm Coast family, that’s exactly how it ended.
Self-defense doesn’t end when the threat goes down. That’s when the real battle begins. Lawyers. Prosecutors. Headlines. USCCA Members never fight that battle alone. Find out how.
