Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that the Dec. 3 firing squad execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will be public, though he did not say what form that access will take.
“He’s going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be,” Hegseth said in an interview with Jack Posobiec of Human Events Daily. “And we’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public.”
Military.com reached out to the Pentagon for comment on Hegseth’s remarks and whether logistics are being taken care ahead of the execution date.
“The secretary is correct. It will be livestreamed. Details will follow,” a Pentagon official told Military.com.
No execution in the United States has been carried out in public since 1936.
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was convicted and sentenced to death in 2013 for the 2009 attack that killed 13 people and wounded more than 30.
Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle set the execution for 1 p.m. Dec. 3 at Fort Hood, Texas. That will be 62 days after President Donald Trump approved the death sentence, and within the 60-to-150-day window military regulation requires.
As Military.com previously reported, it would be the military’s first execution since 1961 and its first by firing squad since 1945.
The date is set but not certain. Hasan remains entitled to seek review in federal civilian court, which could still delay the execution.
