The search for a missing sailor assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman ended in tragedy after authorities recovered his body near Naval Station Norfolk, nearly a week after he disappeared.
Isaac Benjamin Morris, 22, was found dead on Friday, June 19, 2026, in the water near the piers at Naval Station Norfolk, according to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Morris had been reported missing after he was last seen on June 14.
The discovery brought an end to an intensive search effort that involved NCIS, Virginia State Police and local authorities. While officials have confirmed Morris’ death, investigators have released few details about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance or what led to his death. As of June 24, NCIS had not publicly disclosed a cause or manner of death.
Morris was an Engineman Fireman Apprentice from California, according to the Navy. He joined the Navy in October 2025 and reported aboard USS Harry S. Truman in April 2026, meaning he had been assigned to the carrier for roughly two months prior to his disappearance.
Following the discovery of his body, USS Harry S. Truman Commanding Officer Capt. Daniel Prochazka issued a statement expressing condolences to Morris’ family and shipmates.
“The entire Truman team is grieving the loss of Fireman Apprentice Isaac Morris,” Prochazka said. “Our hearts are with his family, friends and shipmates, and we are focused on supporting them with care and compassion during this difficult time.”
The Search for Morris, Another Unaccounted For Sailor
Virginia State Police issued a Critically Missing Adult Alert on social media after Morris disappeared from Naval Station Norfolk.
Authorities said he was last seen on the installation on June 14, adding that his disappearance posed a credible threat to his health and safety. Investigators asked the public for assistance while search efforts continued around the base and surrounding waterways.
NCIS has not publicly explained where Morris was before he disappeared or whether investigators suspect foul play. The agency has also declined to release additional information while the investigation remains ongoing.
Morris’ death is not the only missing-person case currently facing Naval Station Norfolk.
Another sailor, Seaman Apprentice Alexander Leo Schlageter, disappeared from the installation in late May and remains missing. Virginia State Police issued a separate Critically Missing Adult Alert after Schlageter was last seen at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29.
NCIS has released few details about Schlageter’s disappearance and has said the investigation remains active.
For now, investigators continue working to determine what happened to Morris in the days before his body was discovered. Until NCIS releases additional findings, questions surrounding his disappearance and death remain unanswered.
This is a developing story. Updates will be made as more information is released.
