Mossberg releases a compelling new semi-auto tactical shotgun at SHOT Show 2026.
The 990 shown at SHOT is built around a 590-style receiver. It runs a gas system fully contained under the handguard forward of the receiver. That design allows the use of the Magpul SGA stock without adapters or extensions.
This configuration keeps the rear of the gun clean and familiar. It also simplifies setup for shooters who want a more tailored setup. This is achieved by allowing the user to add or remove spacers from the stock to customize the length of pull.
Sights and Optics Mounting
The 990 ships with a ghost ring rear sight and a shielded fiber optic for the front. The rear ghost ring can be removed to expose an RMS-c footprint optic cut.
Mossberg includes adapters in the box for both RMR and Doctor, and Leupold footprints, so no aftermarket parts are required to mount most micro dots.
Barrel Lengths and Capacity
Two barrel lengths are offered. A 14-inch version, which holds 6+1 rounds, and an 18.5-inch version that holds 7+1. The magazine tube runs the full length of the barrel and sits flush with the muzzle on both models.
Unlike many tactical shotguns, the barrel on the 990 accepts chokes. It only comes with a flush-fit cylinder choke. However, this opens up the possibility of using a tighter choke, a standoff device, or even a suppressor.
Controls, Sling Mounts, and Furniture
The forearm features M-LOK slots at the three, six, and nine o’clock positions as well as a molded-in heat shield. QD sling mounts are built into the forearm as well.

Those sling points sit just in front of the receiver, which isn’t often seen on shotguns but is very common on ARs and other long guns. Having one point of the sling on the buttstock and the other just forward of the receiver is my personal preference. Therefore, I am glad this design makes that easy to achieve without modification.
The bolt release also received an update. It now features a protective guard to prevent accidental activation while still allowing for quick and deliberate use. Mossberg added it after early feedback on previous models.
Availability and Pricing
The 990 is scheduled to start shipping this February. Both the SBS and full-length models carry a $1,300 MSRP.
The 14-inch version qualifies as a short-barreled shotgun. However, with $0 tax stamps and quick E-form processing times, the extra hassle may be worth it if you are interested in a more compact package.
