The District of Columbia is one of the most anti-gun jurisdictions in the country. While they were a “shall issue” territory before Bruen, it wasn’t out of some sense of allegiance to the United States Constitution. It was because they lost in court and didn’t want to take it up to the Supreme Court because they knew they’d lose there, too.
Their anti-gun schtick is old, and it’s tiresome because D.C. is anything but a peaceful place. While the more tourist areas are usually fine, the rest of the city has been akin to a warzone for decades.
Enter President Donald Trump, who mobilized the National Guard specifically to help police the city, and it’s helped.
However, when those troops meet the failure of the city’s gun laws, bad things can happen.
A National Guard member was shot and injured while trying to break up a fight in the nation’s capital, and the person suspected of firing the gun also was shot in an exchange with guard members, police said Monday.
The shooting happened at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday as seven or eight guard members in a parked van were monitoring the fight on a sidewalk in southeast Washington, in the Eastern Market neighborhood, said Jeffery Carroll, interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington.
“They exited their vehicle to try to intervene to try to stop the fight from occurring when they heard gunshots,” Carroll told reporters. “An individual that had been involved in the fight had pulled out a firearm and began shooting.”
The person ran into an alley, Carroll said, and guard members immediately told the person to drop the gun.
As you can imagine, they did not drop the gun, firing it instead. He hit a Guardsman in the leg, but he got shot in the abdomen for his trouble. Both were transported to the hospital, but the injuries were described as not life-threatening.
I’m glad to hear the soldier will recover. I don’t really care that much about the scumbag, but if he lives to stand trial, so be it.
However, let’s remember once again that D.C. has strict gun control laws on the books. They were passed knowing not just that people from elsewhere could cross into the city, but that they would. A massive number of people who work in D.C. live in Virginia and Maryland. They’re going to cross the border daily.
Still, they passed gun control having to know it wouldn’t work, and they failed.
This incident is evidence that those who would tell you that gun laws work are thinking with their fourth point of contact, which is fair since their heads are up there.
Now, to be fair, someone like this isn’t likely to be deterred by the good guy with a gun, be he civilian, civilian law enforcement, or military. The fact that he shot at soldiers tells you that he was bucking for a Darwin Award something fierce.
Because of that, I figure an armed citizen would have to put him down rather than just scaring him off.
Oh no. Anyway…
