A member of the National Guard has been hospitalized after being shot while breaking up a fight in Washington D.C.
Jeffery Carroll, interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, told the Associated Press that the shooting happened at around 11:10 p.m. Sunday night when around seven or eight Guard members monitored a fight on a sidewalk in the southeast portion of the district.
“They exited their vehicle to try to intervene to try to stop the fight from occurring when they heard gunshots,” Carroll said, according to the AP. “An individual that had been involved in the fight had pulled out a firearm and began shooting.”
He said the incident happened when Guard members told a person to drop the gun as he ran into an alley.
“The individual then pointed the weapon toward National Guard members, who returned fire,” Carroll said, adding that the Guard member was struck in the leg.
Carroll said the person suspected of firing the gun was shot in the abdomen and taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities arrested the suspect, who the National Guard has not named, according to Carroll.
National Guard Presence in D.C.
The incident came over a year after President Donald Trump deployed the guard to Washington in August 2025 to crack down on what he said was violent crime. At the deployment’s peak, there were some 5,000 troops in the city.
The deployment of the National Guard has proved controversial for those who question whether using them is a fiscally responsible use of money and resources. Critics have argued that crime was already on a downward trend before Trump sent troops to the area.
In August, the Department of Defense forecast that extending the deployment until January 2029 would cost the taxpayer some $1.4 billion.
National Guard members have faced similar past attacks. In November 2025, two Guardsmen in the city were shot near the White House. One died, and the other was critically wounded.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, was charged with over a dozen federal counts related to the attack and has pleaded not guilty.
On Oct. 3, Spec. Jakob Noonan, 22, of the Oklahoma Guard, was arrested and charged after carrying an unauthorized firearm in D.C.
Aside from Washington, Trump has authorized the use of federal troops in other states, including Arkansas, Georgia and Louisiana.
Deployments to other cities have ended or been paused by courts in California and Illinois.
