A call about a possible gas explosion turned into a deadly confrontation Sunday night after Michigan police say a 61-year-old homeowner pointed a gun at responding officers.
According to Local 4 WDIV, the incident began at a home on Saint Francis Street in Livonia, near Eight Mile Road and Grand River Avenue.
Police were initially dispatched after reports of an explosion at the residence.
As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, investigators discovered what they believe were intentionally cut gas lines, prompting a suspected arson investigation.
Once the fire was under control, crews began searching for the homeowner, who lived alone.
Police say officers eventually found the man armed in a neighbor’s backyard.
Investigators said officers attempted to negotiate with him. But the encounter turned deadly when the man allegedly raised his firearm toward officers.
One officer fired, fatally wounding the homeowner.
The shooting is now being investigated by the Michigan State Police. While the Livonia Police Department continues investigating the suspected arson.
Neighbors said the events were difficult to believe.
It was really crazy yesterday,” one resident told Local 4 after returning home to find the street filled with police officers, fire trucks, and emergency personnel.
Another neighbor described the homeowner as “a great neighbor” who was always looking out for those around him. And said they never expected something like this to happen.
Authorities have not released additional details explaining what led up to the explosion or the confrontation.
Neighbors told Local 4 they had heard the man had recently been hospitalized and may have been dealing with an illness. Though police emphasized that remains part of the ongoing investigation and has not been confirmed.
As is standard procedure in Michigan, the Michigan State Police will handle the officer-involved shooting investigation, while Livonia detectives continue working to determine what caused the explosion and whether criminal charges related to the suspected arson would have been appropriate.
The investigation remains ongoing. As always, stay tuned for updates.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
