Even if Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress, the executive branch and President Trump will serve as a firewall for any new federal gun control laws. But the midterms aren’t just about the federal government, and the gun control lobby is already making plans for how they’ll attack the right to keep and bear arms if they’re able to gain governing trifectas in states like Pennsylvania.
In fact, as the Bloomberg-funded website The Trace reports, anti-gunners have a long list of gun control measures queued up and ready to go.
Democrats need to pick up three seats to secure the state Senate. They are also looking to expand their narrow majority in the House. If they succeed in November, they could have the votes to pass major gun restrictions. Among their priorities:
- Expanding background checks: House Democrats want to require background checks for more types of gun purchases. They passed a bill to do so last year, but it has yet to receive a vote in the Senate.
- Passing a red flag law: Democrats have pushed for legislation allowing family members and law enforcement to ask a court to temporarily remove guns from someone deemed a danger to themselves or others. The House approved a red flag law — also known as an extreme risk protection order law — in 2023, but the Senate never followed suit. The House narrowly defeated a similar measure in 2025.
- Outlawing machine gun conversion devices: Last year, a proposal to ban devices that enable handguns to fire up to 1,200 rounds per minute came within one vote of passing the House.
- Banning ghost guns: A measure to prohibit the manufacture, sale, and possession of homemade, untraceable “ghost guns” cleared the House in 2024, only to die in the Senate. Democrats tried again in 2025, but the bill fell one vote short in the House.
Having just lived through a legislative session in Virginia where a new Democrat majority passed more than a dozen gun control measures, I’d be downright shocked if this is the entirety of the gun control lobby’s to-do list in Pennsylvania.
They might not bother with a ban on so-called assault weapons, since the Supreme Court is likely to rule those unconstitutional next year, but we could see a “permit-to-purchase” measure imposed like the one in Colorado. Democrat lawmakers will probably also go after any NFA items that are currently not subject to state-level restrictions, and may try to impose state-level taxes on those items as well.
While Pennsylvania was the focus of The Trace’s story, it’s not the only state where Democrats have a realistic chance of getting a governing trifecta if there’s a blue wave election. Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona could also go blue in a couple of weeks, and though gun control hasn’t been a big issue in many campaigns in those states I guarantee it will be a top priority for Democrats if they have the opportunity to enshrine new restrictions on our right to keep and bear arms into state law.
None of these states are a lock for the Left, however. Gun owners and Second Amendment supporters can play a major role in the outcome on Election Day. In fact, they might very well be the firewall standing between the anti-gunners and our Second Amendment rights. We saw what happened in Virginia last November when gun owners got complacent, and that should be a lesson for 2A supporters in this year’s battleground states: get involved, stay engaged, and get out and vote.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their extreme gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
