Every year from mid-November to mid-December, federal health insurance plans offer open enrollment, also known as open season. The open season gives beneficiaries enrolled in certain insurance plans a chance to make changes to their annual contracted coverage.
FEDVIP open season is Nov. 9-Dec. 14, 2026, for coverage that starts Jan. 1, 2027.
During open season, military retirees and family members, active-duty family members, and reserve households enrolled in Tricare Reserve Select may purchase or make changes to their dental and vision insurance through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).
Military retirees may buy vision and dental coverage through FEDVIP; and active-duty families, and beneficiaries enrolled in Tricare Reserve Select, may buy vision coverage.
Tricare also offers an open season about the same time, when those covered by the military insurance plan are eligible to change their coverage.

Outside the open season, you can make health insurance changes — similarly to both FEDVIP and Tricare coverage — only if you experience a qualifying life event, such as moving to a new area or changing your number of dependents.
FEDVIP open season is typically from the Monday of the second full week in November through the Monday of the second full week in December, part of the wider federal benefits open enrollment.
FEDVIP in 2027
In 2027, depending on their location, military families and retirees who enroll in FEDVIP may choose from:
- 11 dental plan providers and 21 plan options
- Five vision plan providers and 10 plan options
Most carriers offer both standard- and high-coverage plans, giving beneficiaries numerous options. Most plans have different reimbursement levels as well as coverage options available for single, married with one dependent, or family coverage levels.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which administers the federal insurance programs, “has been able to reduce the average rate of premium increases for federal employees and annuitants” for the second year in a row, said OPM’s Associate Director for Healthcare and Insurance Matthew Kiley in an announcement. The statement didn’t provide any percentages. Last year FEDVIP’s monthly dental and vision premiums increased an average of 3.3% (dental) and 0.5% (vision) for 2026, depending on the plan, according to an analysis by the Military Officers Association of America.
