A new mural depicting a major and historically significant U.S. battle has been unveiled in the United Kingdom.
The artwork in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, portrays the Battle of Flamborough Head, a battle which took place between the U.S. Navy and Great Britain’s Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War and sparked the birth of the U.S. Navy.
Its unveiling coincides indirectly with the 251st birthday of the Navy, celebrated annually on Oct. 13 to mark the establishment of the service via a resolution of the Continental Congress.
“I’m hoping that people will be inspired by it,” Sam Porter, the artist who created the mural, told the BBC. “That’s really the ultimate aim, that you put a smile on people’s faces, and they’re interested by it.”
What Happened During the Battle of Falmborough Head?
On Sept. 23, 1779, an American-led squadron secured a pivotal victory against Great Britain’s Royal Navy off the East Yorkshire coast.
Commanding the USS Bonhomme Richard, Continental Navy Captain John Paul Jones intercepted a 40-ship British merchant convoy and fought against the 44-gun frigate HMS Serapis, commanded by Captain Richard Pearson until Pearson surrendered. It is thought that more than 300 men and boys were killed and injured during the battle.
While the Bonhomme Richard sank two days later, the captured Serapis was sailed to Holland. The engagement embarrassed the Royal Navy, boosted American wartime morale, and solidified vital French military support.
The battle was part of the war in which the 13 colonies successfully severed ties with the British Crown to forge a new nation. The 200th anniversary of the battle and the war is approaching in 2029.
Connecting History to Tourism
The mural brings together two things: a look into the history that led the world to its current period, plus another method to showcase military roots for both Americans and the English.
“We wanted something in place for that anniversary because there will be big celebrations, and it has the potential for American tourism,” Martyn Coltman, co-chairman of the Bridlington Ambassadors, a group that promotes the port and commissioned the mural, told the BBC.
“But we also wanted to bring the story to life, because we don’t celebrate it enough locally,” he continued. “The ambassadors are about culture, tourism and the shellfish industry, and all those things fit into a maritime mural.”
James Hodgson is a trustee of the group known as Yorkshire Coast 1779, which works to raise awareness of the battle. There is admittedly “considerable debate” about who actually won.
Even so, Hodgson told the BBC the mural is “fantastic.”
“It is yet another example of a legacy which will hopefully last for many years to come,” he said. “We want people to say, what is that? By asking the question, then hopefully they’ll say, oh, the Battle of Flamborough Head.
“Then they’ll say, well, why is that important? Then, they’ll read about it or come to one of our events.”
Porter added that people in the town had a good response to him painting the mural.
“Sometimes I’m painting, and then I’ll just turn around and I’ve got an audience, which is something I’ve become quite used to,” he said.
Other Revolutionary War Murals and Tributes
There are other Revolutionary War murals across the world, including in the United States, that preserve early American military history.
The oldest and most prominent are the Faulkner Murals, completed in November 1936 and located inside the National Archives Rotunda in Washington.
Painted by Barry Faulkner, the two massive canvases depict the presentation of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
More recent outdoor works include a Belmont, N.C., mural completed June 4, 2026, by Boyce McKinney, honoring the 1780 “South Fork Boys” militia.
In July 2020, artist Mike Prosceno finished a Wilmington, Del., “Road to Yorktown” series, highlighting diverse soldiers.
