An investigation remains ongoing after a dead body was found in a burned vehicle earlier this week on Eglin Air Force Base in northwest Florida.
A 96th Security Forces patrol discovered the vehicle at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on Range Road 234 at Lewis Turner Boulevard, on the base in Florida’s Panhandle, according to a press release issued by the base. As of Friday afternoon, more than two days later, officials had not released the person’s identity, whether they were connected to the military, or how they died.
In its statement, Eglin said the next-of-kin notification process was underway and asked the public to “avoid premature conclusions and speculation in respect to the family.”
The base and the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations continue to investigate.
Military.com reached out to Eglin Air Force Base, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and the local Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office for comment on how the incident occurred, along with updates on the identity of the deceased individual.
An Okaloosa Sheriff’s Office spokesperson referred Military.com to Eglin, which they said is handling the case.
Few Answers, Two Days On
As of Friday, officials had not said whether the person was affiliated with the base or the military. They also released no description of the vehicle.
They had not disclosed a cause of death, what led to the vehicle fire, or whether they suspect foul play.
The location offers little clarity on its own.
Range Road 234 is part of the network of roads serving Eglin’s testing and training ranges, but officials have not said why the vehicle was there or provided a more precise location beyond the intersection area.
Where the Vehicle Was Found
Eglin is one of the largest military installations in the country, covering more than 460,000 acres and hosting Air Force, Space Force and Army organizations, among them the 96th Test Wing, the 33rd Fighter Wing and the 7th Special Forces Group.
Many people live, work and train on that land. The discovery of a person on base property does not by itself establish that the individual was a service member or connected to any particular unit.
Officials have not said when they expect to release more information or whether investigators are asking the public for help.
