Operation Homefront, a military family nonprofit, cited rising need in its appeal to Americans to make a donation during the Veterans Day season. The numbers anchoring its cause: a 48.8% increase in requests for emergency financial help in the first nine months of 2026 paired with separate food insecurity rates that may also indicate rising need.
Food insecurity played a part in why, in 2023, the Department of Defense created the Basic Needs Allowance to address the reality that some active-duty families, particularly larger households at junior enlisted pay grades, were living below the federal poverty line despite a parent serving full-time in the military.

The 48.8% Increase
In some cases, the problem may not be easing up.
Operation Homefront said the 48.8% increase in requests for emergency assistance came through its Critical Financial Assistance Program. The group told Military.com that the measurement comes from its “own program data and reflects the increased demand we are seeing from military and veteran families seeking assistance with essential expenses.”
Last year’s Veterans Day release from the group reported a 39% increase in the same program’s requests.

The Food Insecurity Figure
Operation Homefront cited its findings alongside a figure from Blue Star Families’ 2025 Military Family Lifestyle Survey, released in February 2026. Blue Star Families said more than 28% of military families reported having low or very low food security, “nearly double” a separate rate measured for U.S. households overall. Stripes reported that the share in the Blue Star Families survey was up from 16% in 2023, the last year the survey reported the category; and that 40% of enlisted families reported food insecurity compared with 9% of officer families.
USDA’s annual household food security report provides the comparison. It found that 13.7% of U.S. households were food insecure in 2024, or 18.3 million households. By those two numbers, 28% is a little more than double 13.7%. The two come from different surveys of different groups, so they are not a direct match. Blue Star Families’ figure covers active-duty family respondents — not all military families or veterans.
Operation Homefront acknowledged that “the Blue Star Families survey and USDA national data come from different surveys, samples, and methodologies” and don’t represent an “apples to apples” comparison of the prevalence.
Operation Homefront’s fundraising goal for its 11 Days of Impact campaign, which runs Nov. 1-12, is $500,000.
