Oregon has a mandatory storage law which proponents call “safe storage.” It’s really not, though, because it doesn’t differentiate between those who need ready access to a gun, even a minor who needs it, and those who don’t. Regardless, the law is on the books there, and it completely failed to prevent the shooting in Bend, Oregon.
Now, in the wake of that failure, and the fact that a good guy with a gun basically had to break the law in order to save lives, you’d think lawmakers there would be tripping over themselves to make sure no good guy with a gun ever needs to worry about being sent to prison for doing what’s right.
Nope. The governor is more bothered by the fact that the mandatory storage law failed.
The governor announced she is declaring a state of emergency at Bend-La Pine Schools and High Desert Education Service District. That will allow the districts to avoid state requirements — such as minimums for instructional time — while they recover from the attack.
[Gov. Tina] Kotek said she is directing the Oregon Department of Education to require schools educate parents about the state’s safe-storage law, which requires gun owners to keep firearms locked away when not in use in order to keep them out of the hands of minors.
“Having a law is not enough if people do not understand what it requires or how to comply with that,” Kotek said.
Three students and one teacher at Bend’s Silver Rail Elementary were killed on Oct. 15, when a 16-year-old stormed the school with a shotgun reportedly purchased by his mother.
Law enforcement agencies investigating the incident have not said whether they believe the attacker’s mother violated the safe storage requirement, and Kotek said she did not have more information to share.
In other words, we don’t know if she violated the law or not, but Kotek is proceeding like she did, even though we don’t know that just yet. Absolutely freaking perfect.
Even if she did, though, I hate to break it to Kotek, but the schools aren’t doing a bang-up job of educating kids — this is true almost everywhere in the country, with a few exceptional pockets — and she thinks they can educate the parents? Seriously?
What’ll happen is that they’ll send home a letter or something, which the parents may or may not be required to sign, and they’ll go through the motions because school stuff that makes the parent do things gets annoying, especially when it doesn’t actually involve your child’s education. It’ll accomplish nothing.
Better options would have included armed security at the school, which is something Kotek’s fellow Democrats killed last legislative session.
Or maybe passing a law that won’t put people in the position of risking prison time for saving lives.
The law failed. No amount of telling everyone about the failed law will change that fact.
Again, the law failed.
The good guy with the gun didn’t.
The fact that this isn’t the focus of people like Kotek is mindboggling, to say the least, except that I understand their hostility toward firearms and firearm owners is so severe that they’ll never comprehend what really happened. Gun Derangement Syndrome (GDS) is real, and I’m not sure there’s a cure, but researchers can and should work to find one.
Too bad most of them suffer from it, too.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their extreme gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
